A pop up shop in Redfern.

You may be able to tell that i love Redfern. Since arriving in Sydney in 2001 i’ve “mostly” lived in Chippendale and worked in Strawberry Hills – a miniscule suburb betwixt Redfern and Surry Hills primarily containing a large salmon pink building.

Redfern has always been my train station of choice and since Surry Hills (and the city) are slightly too far to walk during a break i often have lunch or coffee in Redfern cafés too.

A new type of shop is popping up in Redfern these days. A type my mum would call arty farty furniture.

This particular shop is called CRAM and doesn’t yet have business cards or a website or a listing in the Redfern/Waterloo urban walkabout guide or even any signage. But it *does* have some cool stuff and a whole load of personality – just like its owner who gave me this:

The first time i noticed this shop was because a whole herd of mannequins (or at least the lower half and nether regions) were standing out the front. It’s not something you see every day in Redfern:

Word has it the owner used to work on movie sets… the huge costume collection “out the back” and these costume boxes lend authenticity to the rumour:

Funky glassware – i noticed that he’s got the same ones in silver as well as aqua:

A 1970s style light fitting:

And a tiled table that the owner said would be worth thousands if he had time to restore it… as it is he said that he purchased it for over $1300 and will sell for as low as $170:

If you’re a collector of oddities (or just bored, like i was) it’s definitely worth having a look.

  1. We bought a house in Brisbane in 1988 and it had a chandelier exactly like this. The house was built in 1944 and we were told that the chandelier was probably European (Austria) perhaps. We have one disc missing and thought that maybe this shop has a spare?? Woudl love if you could ask as I won’t be in Sydney for a while.
